The project titled “Empowering Youth: Educating Primary School Pupils on Climate Change” was successfully completed mid-year. Its aim was to enhance climate change education in primary schools across Serbia, with a focus on empowering pupils to become active participants in tackling this global challenge. Through education on the causes, consequences, and possible solutions to climate change, the project worked to raise environmental awareness among young people and to lay the foundations for a sustainable future.
The project was based on research conducted by scientists from the University of Novi Sad, which highlighted a significant gap in climate change education in primary schools. It was implemented in cooperation with the Borislav Pekić Primary School in Belgrade, which is part of the certified Eco-Schools programme.
Launched in September 2024, the initiative was successfully carried out through a series of five interactive lectures designed for pupils from Year 2 to Year 7. The sessions covered key topics, including the causes, effects, and mitigation measures related to climate change. Following the lectures, pupils took part in practical activities such as planting seedlings in school yards. Through these activities, they gained a deeper understanding of the importance of healthy ecosystems and the role of bees in environmental conservation.
In this way, teachers were enabled to integrate climate change education into their curricula in a simple and practical manner.
